AIR 8000®

AKU’s ultra-breathable upper system — built for long days, high output and warm conditions.

AIR 8000® is AKU’s first upper construction technology, developed and patented by AKU (since 1991) to increase the breathability of mountain footwear. It uses a specially made fabric whose breathability increases over time — helping heat and moisture vapour move away from the foot for steadier comfort on the move.

  • Maximum breathability: engineered to manage heat and perspiration during active use.
  • Comfort over distance: helps reduce moisture build-up that can lead to hot spots.
  • Works across seasons: less moisture build-up can also help reduce that cold, damp feeling when temperatures drop.
What this means for you

A more comfortable internal climate — especially on warm, high-output days — with reduced moisture build-up that can contribute to hot spots and blisters.

What is AIR 8000®?

AIR 8000® is an AKU-exclusive upper system designed to ensure a very high level of breathability. It consists of a specially made fabric whose breathability increases over a period of 24 hours, reaching up to 11.5 times more breathable than a conventionally made fabric. In practical terms, it helps manage moisture and heat so feet feel less “stuffy” during extended wear.

What do the labs say?

Laboratory tests carried out by GORE-TEX confirm that the upper made with the exclusive AKU AIR 8000® system offers a level of breathability up to 11.5 times higher than normal standards. Almost 20 years later, AIR 8000® remains one of the most advanced technologies to ensure excellent breathability of mountain footwear.

Tip: breathability is helped most by keeping the upper clean, using technical socks, and allowing footwear to dry fully between uses.

How it works (and why it helps comfort)

Moisture management (hot spots & blisters)

Friction problems usually increase when feet are damp. By helping reduce moisture build-up, AIR 8000® supports a drier internal climate, which can reduce the likelihood of hot spots developing into blisters (especially on long, warm days).

Worth knowing

AIR 8000® improves breathability, but sock choice and fit still matter: a technical walking sock and a stable heel hold are key for blister prevention.

Comfort across temperatures
  • Hot environments: helps keep feet cooler by improving heat and moisture escape.
  • Cooler environments: limiting moisture build-up can help reduce the cold, damp feeling.
  • All-day wear: particularly noticeable when you’re on your feet for extended hours.
Best use cases

Fast hiking, warm-weather hiking, travel and everyday long wear, plus professional use where you’re active for hours.

Jargon buster (plain English)

Upper
The outer part of the boot/shoe (everything above the sole).
Breathability
How easily moisture vapour and heat can escape from inside the footwear.
Hot spot
A friction point that can develop into a blister (often worse when feet are damp).
Waterproof
AIR 8000® is a breathability technology. Waterproofing depends on the lining and construction (e.g. a membrane) on that specific model.

Care (keep breathability working)

Breathability drops when the upper is clogged with dirt, oils and fine grit. Simple cleaning keeps AIR 8000® performing as intended.

1
Brush and rinse
Brush off dried mud and dust. Rinse with lukewarm water and a soft brush/cloth to remove ground-in grime.
2
Dry gently
Remove insoles and dry naturally away from direct heat. Avoid radiators/fires which can damage materials.
3
If your model is waterproof
If the footwear has a waterproof lining, keep the outer clean and water-repellent (DWR) to support comfort and moisture transfer.
Sock choice matters

Breathability works best with socks that move moisture away from the skin (technical walking socks). Cotton tends to hold moisture and can feel clammy.

AIR 8000® FAQs

Is AIR 8000® waterproof?
No — AIR 8000® is a breathability technology in the upper. If a model is waterproof, that comes from the lining and overall construction. Always check the product page for the waterproof lining details.
Does AIR 8000® help reduce blisters?
It can help by reducing moisture build-up from perspiration (damp feet often increase friction). Fit, lacing and sock choice are still the biggest factors — AIR 8000® supports the overall comfort system.
My boots feel less breathable — what’s the most common cause?
Dirt and fine grit clogging the upper. Clean the footwear (especially fabric areas), dry gently, and avoid heavy treatments on textile panels that can block airflow.
Does AIR 8000® work with a waterproof membrane lining?
Yes — on some models, AIR 8000® is paired with a waterproof lining to balance weather protection and comfort. Keeping the outer clean and water-repellent supports the best overall performance.
Is AIR 8000® only for outdoor use?
No — it’s designed for outdoor performance, but the comfort benefit is just as noticeable in everyday wear, especially if you’re on your feet for long hours.
