Waterproof protection that still lets your feet breathe.
In AKU footwear, the GORE-TEX® membrane sits behind the outer material to help keep external moisture out, while allowing perspiration vapour to escape. That means more reliable comfort in wet UK conditions — on the hill, on the job, and in everyday use.
Waterproof: blocks rain, puddles and wet ground from entering.
Breathable: helps move moisture vapour out to reduce clamminess.
Comfort-led performance: built for long days walking, trekking, duty, and travel.
What this means for you
Dry from the outside, with a steadier internal climate — so comfort lasts longer when the weather turns.
Waterproof, breathable membrane technology used across selected AKU models.
What is GORE-TEX®?
What you’ll learn in 60 seconds
Why liquid water can’t get in: the membrane blocks rain and splash from penetrating.
How comfort stays steadier: perspiration vapour can move outward during activity.
Why care matters: keeping the outer clean and water-repellent (DWR) helps breathability perform in sustained wet weather.
A quick visual explanation of the waterproof + breathable principle — why liquid water can’t get in, while moisture vapour can move outward to support comfort.
Tip: For best comfort in sustained wet weather, keep the outer clean and restore water repellency (DWR) if water stops beading.
GORE-TEX® is a waterproof, breathable membrane integrated into the lining system of the boot/shoe. It’s positioned behind the outer material, and works by blocking liquid water while allowing moisture vapour (sweat in gas form) to move outward. In plain terms: it helps keep your feet dry from the outside, while reducing that “sealed-in” feel during long wear.
How it works (visual guide)
Waterproof in, vapour out — the core principle
The GORE-TEX® membrane sits behind the outer. Liquid water (rain/splash) can’t push through, while moisture vapour generated inside the footwear can move outward — helping comfort stay steadier over long wear.
Typical lining package (shoe): outer material on the outside; the GORE-TEX® membrane behind it; a protective knit; and an inner lining next to the foot. Water can’t penetrate from the outside, while sweat vapour can escape.
Boot construction (added structure): some designs add a functional non-woven layer to support fit and shape. The principle stays the same: outer blocks water, membrane provides waterproof barrier, inner layers protect the membrane and manage comfort.
Why some GORE-TEX models feel warmer
Not all GORE-TEX footwear feels the same. Some constructions add a functional foam layer for warmth and comfort. The membrane still does the waterproof/breathable job — but insulation and build choices can make a model feel noticeably warmer (or less airy) in use.
Common confusion: “My boots feel damp”
The most common cause is condensation, especially if the outer fabric is saturated (“wetting out”). The membrane can still be waterproof, but breathability drops, so the inside can feel damper. Cleaning the outer and restoring DWR usually helps.
GORE-TEX® footwear laminates used by AKU (3 types)
Extended Comfort
Best for mild to warmer conditions and higher-output movement where breathability matters most.
High breathability focus.
Comfortable for faster walking, travel and everyday wear.
Durable waterproof protection.
Performance Comfort
The most versatile choice for cool, changeable conditions — ideal for typical mixed UK weather.
Balanced warmth + breathability.
Suited to trekking and long days in variable conditions.
Durable waterproof protection.
Insulated Comfort
Designed for cold to very cold temperatures — keeping feet warm and dry through winter conditions.
Added warmth through insulation/build choices.
Useful for winter use and longer static periods.
Durable waterproof protection in wet/snowy conditions.
Jargon buster (plain English)
Membrane
The waterproof layer inside the boot/shoe that blocks water coming in.
Breathable
Lets moisture vapour (sweat in gas form) escape to reduce clamminess.
DWR
A water-repellent finish on the outer that helps water bead and roll off.
Wetting out
When the outer fabric saturates. The membrane can still be waterproof, but breathability drops and you can feel damper inside.
Gusseted tongue
The tongue is stitched to the sides to reduce water/debris entry (water can still enter from above the collar).
