Fit Guidance & Lasts

Fit is the foundation of comfort, control and long-term durability.

Use this guide to choose the right last (shape), decide between Standard vs Wide, and run a quick at-home fit check before your first outdoor day. Small fit mistakes (especially toe room and heel hold) are the most common cause of discomfort on long walks.

The AKU way to get it right

Last (shape) first → size second → tune with socks + lacing.

Start with the last (the shape that decides feel + control)

A last is the foot-shaped form used to build the footwear. It influences toe shape, forefoot width, instep volume, heel hold and overall “on-foot feel”. AKU uses different last categories to match fit intent to the real job (trekking comfort vs technical precision, etc.). This is why two models in the same size can feel different.

Anatomical Fit
Comfortable, enveloping anatomical shapes designed for Trekking — stability and comfort on uneven trails over long distance.
Best for: day hiking, trekking, backpacking-style mileage where comfort matters most.
Precise Fit
Precise and slightly curved shapes designed for Backpacking and Multiterrain use — secure control when the ground gets more technical.
Best for: mixed terrain, steeper paths, higher control under load.
Performance Fit
Dry, enveloping shapes used on the most technical Mountain footwear — designed to promote precision and sensitivity on rock and ice.
Best for: mountaineering, technical terrain, precision foot placement.
Women’s Fit
Shapes developed specifically for female foot anatomy — comfortable and enveloping, designed to provide stability and comfort on uneven trails.
Best for: women wanting a shape built around women’s foot proportions (not just “smaller sizing”).
Relaxed Fit
Softer, welcoming shapes designed for Mountain Inspired footwear — leisure use and lighter outdoor activities.
Best for: everyday wear, travel, light trails, easy walking.
Practical tip

If you’re torn between two models, choose by use case first (trekking comfort vs technical precision), then refine with Wide options, sock thickness, and lacing systems (DFS/BOA where applicable).

Standard vs Wide (reduce pressure points without sizing up)

Some AKU models are offered in Wide. Wide is about shape and volume (especially at the forefoot) — not length. If you regularly feel squeezed at the ball of the foot, get numbness, or plan thicker socks, Wide is often the cleanest fix.

What “Wide” means in AKU
On AKU UK product pages, Wide models are typically described as approximately 2mm wider overall, with an additional 5mm at the ball of the foot (model dependent).
When Wide is the better choice
  • Pressure at the ball of foot / forefoot squeeze.
  • You need room for thicker socks without going longer.
  • Feet swell noticeably on long days.

Tip: if you only need toe length (to stop toe bang), sizing up may help. If you need width, Wide is usually better than buying a longer size.

Sizing: the at-home fit check (10 minutes that saves your feet)

1
Use EU size as your baseline
Then cross-check UK sizing using the Size Guide. If one foot is larger, size for the larger foot.
2
Try on with your real sock system
Thin socks = higher output / warmer conditions. Slightly thicker socks = colder/wetter months. Fit changes with sock thickness.
3
Lock heel + midfoot first
Heel should feel controlled with minimal lift. If heel lifts, you’ll get rubbing and less stability.
4
Check toe room for descents
On a stair/step, toes should not drive into the front. Toe bang indoors usually becomes worse outdoors.
5
Walk for 10–15 minutes indoors
If you feel pressure points indoors, they usually worsen outside. Adjust lacing, try different socks, or consider Wide.
Returns/exchanges tip

Do your fit check indoors on clean, dry surfaces. Once worn outdoors, footwear can be harder to exchange. If sizing isn’t right, contact AKU UK customer service and we’ll help you correct it.

Fit tuning (lacing, BOA, DFS and Dynamic Fit)

Small adjustments make a measurable difference on long days. Prioritise heel hold first, then set forefoot comfort.

Standard lacing (most models)
  • Lock heel + midfoot first, then relax forefoot slightly for long-day comfort.
  • Avoid overtightening the forefoot — circulation and swelling change over hours.
  • Recheck after 10–15 minutes indoors to catch pressure early.
Precision systems (model dependent)
  • BOA: micro-adjustable tension for even pressure distribution (model dependent).
  • DFS: Comfort Walking vs Precise Climbing modes for technical terrain (model dependent).
  • Dynamic Fit: adaptive heel tension through the stride (model dependent).

Quick troubleshooting (the most common fit problems)

Heel lift / rubbing
Prioritise heel and instep lock first (before tightening forefoot). Try a slightly thicker sock, adjust lacing tension, and ensure the last category suits your use (more precise lasts hold the heel better). Persistent lift often means the model/last isn’t ideal or you need a different size.
Toe bang on descents
You likely need more toe room (length) or better heel hold. Secure heel/instep first, then fine-tune forefoot. If toes still hit indoors on a stair test, consider the next size up (or a different last).
Forefoot pressure / numbness
First relax forefoot lacing slightly. If pressure persists, Wide is often the right fix (rather than buying longer). Also check sock thickness — thick socks can compress toes and reduce circulation.
Hotspots / blisters
Usually a combination of movement + moisture. Improve heel hold, ensure the sock is technical (avoid cotton), and confirm the last/volume is right. If you feel hotspots indoors, don’t “hope they disappear” — refine fit before your first full day out.
Fit & lasts FAQs

What’s the difference between “last” and “size”?
Size is the length/overall scale. The last is the shape (toe profile, width, volume, heel hold). Two models can be the same size but feel different because the last category differs.
If I’m between sizes, should I size up or go Wide?
If the issue is toe length or toe bang, sizing up may help. If the issue is width/pressure at the forefoot, Wide is usually the better choice than going longer.
Do AKU boots “stretch” or “break in” a lot?
They can soften and shape slightly with wear, but they won’t reliably fix the wrong size or last. If something feels wrong indoors, it usually gets worse outdoors. Use socks + lacing + Wide options to refine fit properly.
Can I use my own orthotics/insoles?
Often yes, but orthotics can change volume and heel hold. If your orthotic is thick or strongly corrective, you may need more volume (or Wide). Try the at-home check with your orthotic installed before committing to outdoor use.
Is Women’s Fit just “smaller sizing”?
No — Women’s Fit uses a last designed around women’s foot proportions. If you’re choosing between Men’s and Women’s versions of a model, the on-foot feel can differ even at equivalent sizing.
I’m still unsure — what should I tell you for the best advice?
Send us: the model name, your usual EU size, whether you want thin or thick socks, and what you typically walk on (mud/rock/mixed trails) — we’ll recommend the best last category and whether Standard or Wide is likely to suit you.
